Operations Division Commander's Duties

Primarily an administrative position, the Operations Division Commander is staffed by a Captain who oversees the Investigations and Patrol Sections. He manages the division's budgets, personnel, various special units, City of Live Oak contract and citizen volunteers.

Members of the Investigations Section are responsible for investigating felony cases submitted to them for follow up by patrol deputies. They also perform follow up investigation regarding coroners’ investigations, public administrator cases, and complex misdemeanor cases, or other cases as assigned.

The Patrol Section's primary goal is to protect life and property. In fulfilling this basic duty, patrol deputies encounter all facets of law enforcement, which may range from giving directions or providing assistance to a stranded motorist, rendering first aid, handling a minor civil complaint, or a major crime against a person or property. With shifts scheduled around the clock, the patrol division provides protection and service for Sutter County 24 hours a day, 7 days week throughout the year.

All administrative duties and the majority of the patrol assignments are preformed by the staff from the Sheriff's Office headquarters located in Yuba City. Patrol duties for Robbins, Meridian, Nicolaus and the Pleasant Grove Areas are provided by assigned resident deputies.

Sutter County Sheriff's Office currently contracts with the City of Live Oak for law enforcement services. This contract area includes the city limits and the surrounding rural area. The boundaries are encompassed by the county line on the north, and east to the Feather River, south to Paseo Road and to Township Road on the west. The patrol services are provided by Sheriff's Office staff assigned to the Live Oak substation located next to the fire station on the corner of "Fir" and "O" Street in Live Oak. With the exception that they are specially trained in traffic enforcement and traffic accident investigation, deputies assigned to the Live Oak substation provide all the same services and functions to the contract area as the main office deputies provide to the rest of the county.
