Lieutenant James Casner has worked for the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office since August 1988. He previously worked for the cities of Grass Valley and Nevada City Police Departments. Lt. Casner was promoted to sergeant in March 2000 and in October 2004 he was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom until December 2006. Lt. Casner was promoted to Lieutenant in January 2007 and worked as the Commander of the Live Oak Substation until he was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in January 2012 until December 2012. Upon his return Lt. Casner was assigned to the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office’s Investigation Unit.

Lt. Casner has been assigned to the Live Oak Contract Area, the Boat Patrol Unit, the Narcotic Enforcement Team, Underwater Search and Recovery Team, Special Enforcement Detail, Search and Rescue Team, Citizen Volunteer Coordinator and Swift Water Rescue Team. In addition, he has served as Field Training Officer, Background Investigator, and Internal Affairs Investigator.

Lt. Casner has an Associate of Science Degree in Administration of Justice from Yuba College and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from University of Phoenix. He is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Business Administration/Public Administration.
